R410A is a near-azeotropic blend of R-32 and R-125, split 50/50 by weight, and it carries a GWP of roughly 2,088. That number puts it firmly in the refrigerant category the AIM Act is actively phasing down, since allowances are allocated by GWP-weighted volume rather than raw pounds shipped, and it’s the main reason new equipment has already started moving toward lower-GWP blends like R454B.

On the safety side, R410A is classified A1: nonflammable, lower toxicity, the same class R22 carried before it. That’s part of why R410A became the standard replacement for R22 systems in the first place, and it’s still the easiest refrigerant to handle compared to the A2L blends now entering the market.

Where R410A Gets Used

Residential Central AC and Heat Pump Systems

This is still the largest install base for R410A: residential split systems and heat pumps built over roughly the last decade, most of which are years away from replacement and will need R410A for service, recharge, and repair for a long time yet.

Light Commercial Rooftop and Packaged Units

Light commercial buildings running rooftop units and packaged AC systems installed in the same window are in the same position: the equipment is built for R410A, and swapping refrigerants isn’t a simple retrofit even if a lower-GWP option exists for new installs.

Servicing Existing Equipment, Not Specifying New Installs

The refrigerant conversation for new installs has mostly moved past R410A toward A2L blends like R454B, but that shift doesn’t apply if you’re servicing, recharging, or repairing equipment that’s already running. R410A is still exactly what those jobs call for, and that’s not changing just because new equipment has moved on.

The AIM Act Is Phasing Down R410A on a Fixed Schedule

The Reduction Schedule, Year by Year

The EPA’s AIM Act ties every allowance to a 2022 baseline, and R410A loses ground on the same calendar every producer and importer has to follow. 2022 and 2023 already sat at 90% of that baseline, a 10% cut to start. 2024 through 2028 caps production at 60% of baseline, a 40% reduction that’s the steepest single jump in the whole schedule. Then it tightens again: 2029 through 2033 drops to 30% of baseline, 2034 and 2035 fall to 20%, and 2036 onward settles at 15%, an 85% total reduction from where the industry started. Why Supply Gets Tighter Even When Demand Doesn't Drop

None of that schedule cares how many R410A systems are still running in the field, and there are millions of them installed over the last decade or more that still need service gas every summer. As the allowance shrinks, the same fixed pool of R410A has to cover a demand curve that hasn’t shrunk nearly as fast, and that mismatch is exactly what drives the price and availability pressure contractors are starting to feel on service calls.

What This Means for Contractors Servicing Existing Systems

If most of your R410A volume goes toward servicing systems that are already in the field rather than new installs, the phasedown affects you differently than it affects an OEM. Your priority is making sure you can still get the gas an existing customer’s system already runs on, and that’s where having a supplier who plans inventory around the AIM Act schedule instead of getting surprised by it actually matters.

Reclaimed R410A comes from our buyback and recovery programs: contractors selling surplus refrigerant recovered during service calls, decommissioning jobs, and system replacements. That inbound volume runs through our in-house mixed-gas separation process before it’s reclaimed, so what you’re buying has already been screened and purified rather than resold as-is from whatever came off a job site.

Why Reclaimed R410A Matters More as the Phasedown Continues

As virgin R410A production keeps shrinking under the AIM Act schedule, reclaimed supply becomes a bigger share of what’s actually available to buy, not a niche alternative. Building a relationship with a supplier who reclaims in-house, rather than one who’s also chasing the same shrinking virgin allocation everyone else is, is worth doing before supply gets tight rather than after.
